EXAMPLES OF CORRESPONDENCE RELATING TO UNDERGROUND TRANSMISSION OF FUNDS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO SHAMSHUIPO PRISONERS-OF-WAR.

(a) Letter dated August, 1942 from Major H.G. Robertson,

R.A.M.C., Shamshuipo Camp.

"Dear Dr. Selwyn-Clarke, Thank you very much for the

following items which have reached us:-

Marmite 2 jars, soft soap 3 jars, cod liver oil 1 bottle, quinine for intravenous injection 2 bottles, aspirin tablets 1000, pil. ferri carb. 1000, diphtheria anti- toxin 5phials.

We are extremely grateful for your help.

(b) Letter dated 13th September, 1942 from same officer:-

"Thank you very much for the tablets Vitamin B and

tablets Sulphanilamide. The following would, also, be greatly appreciated:-

Antitoxin diphtheria, fish liver oil, nicotinic acid, M. and B693, tincture benz. co., acid boric, calx.chlor. iodine, aspirin, sulphur, Hong Kong foot powder, gentian violet, quinine, vitamin B, hyoscine, aperients, concentrated foods, ol. ricini, iron preparations, sodii sulph.

(c) Letter dated 24th September, 1942, from the same officer:-

"We have received with grateful thanks the following

items:-

Antitoxin diphtheria 120,000 units, tabs. quinine bisulph. 1 tin, tabs. anti-beriberi 1 tin, tabs. M. and B. 693 3 tins, tabs. nicotinic acid 1 bottle, tabs. aspirin 1000. Further supplies, particularly of antitoxin would be invaluable if they could be

spared. We are extremely grateful for all the supplies you have already sent us, which have been of the greatest possible use."

(a) Letter dated 29th October, 1942, from same officer.

"Thank you very much for the following received today:-

Sulphanilamide tablets 1000, thiamin chloride 1 bottle, emetine hydrochloride 20 ampoules. I am glad to say that the diphtheria seems to be abating, at any rate among the British and we we are hoping soon to be able to get general cases sent out of camp.

(e) Letter dated 29th November, 1942, from the same officer:-

"Thank you so much for the following received today:-

1 tin powder (unlabelled but we shall be able to find out what it is), 1 bottle nicotinic acid tablets, 1 bottle adrenalin 1/1000, 1 10-cc all-glass syringe, 2 dozen hypodermic needles. They are all most

welcome/
